A 2016 study examined the evolution of resistant microbes in India and found that the over-prescribing and unregulated use of antibiotics, antibiotic use in agriculture and for livestock, and a lack of regulation of the discharge of antimicrobial waste into the environment all contribute to the superbug problem. In 2010 India consumed more antibiotics for human health per person than any other country. What’s more, the nation’s intake spiked by 62 percent from 2001 to 2010. Israeli researchers fight back against antibiotic resistant superbugs

A unique antibiotic that can kill bacteria which are resistant to conventional anti-bacterials without damaging the cells that store them has been developed by scientists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The pioneering study, published in the prestigious Angewandte Chemie of the German Chemical Society, was carried out by Dr. Zvi Hayouka and colleagues at the Hebrew University’s Institute of Biochemistry, Food Science and Nutrition at the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment in Rehovot. Reviewers called the study “a most important discovery” in the field of antibiotics and researchers said they believe findings of their research “will help develop new antibiotics and reduce mortality from future infectious disease”

WHO ranks antibiotics in a bid to counter drug resistance

The WHO published a new classification of antibiotics that aim to fight drug resistance, with penicillin-type drugs recommended as the first line of defence and others for use only when absolutely necessary. Fast CRISPR test easily detects Zika and antibiotic resistance

The system that sparked a revolution in gene editing can also be used in fast and cheap tests for pathogens. A tool based on CRISPR has been shown to detect the Zika virus in blood, urine and saliva, but could also be used for understanding cancer. Industrial pollution from Indian pharmaceutical companies making medicines for nearly all the world’s drug companies is fuelling the creation of deadly superbugs, suggests new research. Global health authorities have no regulation in place to stop this happening.
