Multidrug-resistant TB will rise in India, says new study

A month after the Indian Health Ministry set itself the target of eliminating TB by 2025, a new study in the Lancet says India’s TB crisis is likely to get worse. The report projects that by 2040, the percentage of Multidrug Resistant TB will make up 32.5% of all TB cases in Russia, 12.4% of the TB cases in India, 8.9% of the TB cases in the Philippines, and 5.7% of all TB cases in South Africa. The findings are alarming as India is home to the most serious ‘hotspots’ of MDR-TB transmission, especially in overcrowded cities such as Mumbai. Not only does India shoulder the highest TB burden in the world, with over 2m of the 10m reported cases, it also accounts for the most drug-resistant patients – nearly 1.3 lakh people who do not respond to first line drugs

The Deadliest Form Of Tuberculosis Is Snowballing In Countries That Are Already Hard Hit

The deadliest forms of TB are worsening in four of the countries with the largest number of TB cases, according to a new Lancet Infectious Disease journal report. While TB has an over 83% cure rate, on average globally, multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) which is resistant to the standard antibiotic regimen, has about a 52% survival rate if treated. Extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) has a 28% survival rate when treated. Currently 40% of all multi-drug TB resistant cases occur in Russia, India, the Philippines and South Africa. This study predicts by 2040 it will be 1:3 in Russia, 1:10 in the Philippines and 1:20 in South Africa – massive increases on the year 2000 baseline

Deadly, drug-resistant Candida yeast infection spreads in the US

On 16th March the U.S. CDC reported that 53 people have been taken ill with Candida Auris, which causes multi-drug resistant infections that can result in organ failure, most of them in New York state. A further 27 healthy carriers of the ‘emerging fungus’ have been identified in three states where clinical cases were detected

'Greater focus on research in multi-drug resistant TB needed'

The Indian Society for Clinical Research said it believed there needs to be a greater focus on research into multi-drug resistant TB. This will lead to the development of innovative treatments for drug-resistant TB and reduce India’s healthcare cost burden and save lives

WHO urges action against HIV drug resistance threat

WHO alerts countries to the increasing trend of resistance to HIV drugs detailed in a report based on national surveys conducted in several countries. The HIV drug resistance report 2017 shows that in 6 of the 11 countries surveyed in Africa, Asia and Latin America, over 10% of people starting antiretroviral therapy had a strain of HIV that was resistant to some of the most widely used HIV medicines. Once the threshold of 10% has been reached, WHO recommends those countries urgently review their HIV treatment programmes

Rise of superbug tuberculosis hampers global control efforts

Rising rates of drug-resistant TB are threatening to derail decades of progress against the disease and new antibiotics to treat them are in their infancy. Around 1 in 5 cases of TB are now resistant to at least one major anti-TB drug, researchers for a new study found. Around 1 in 20 are multi-drug resistant or extensively drug resistant. Approximately half of global cases of MDR-TB are in India, China and Russia, but migration and international travel have allowed drug-resistant strains to appear in almost every part of the world
